good evening. i'm katie marzullo. police arrested a murder suspect in connection with human remains found in a suitcase. police detained the man late last night in tenderloin neighborhood. early this morning, officers made the arrest. abc7 news reporter kornell ber northward has more. >> it sounded crazy like tv shows. >> reporter: many breathe easier knowing a murderer is off the streets. >> an arrest has been made here. >> i am relieved. kids come through here.

>> reporter: 59-year-old mark andrews is suspected of murdering a person whose headless torso found dumped in a suitcase on 11th street wednesday. other body parts found in a trash can nearby. abc7 news shows this suspect wearing the same ball cap and clothing lugging a case on howard street about two blocks from where it was dumped. a motive for the heinous crime is not known. victim's identity is still a mystery. the coroner can only say it was a light skinned male. >> and i've spoken to the man a couple of times in passing. that's crazy. >> reporter: jackie williams had seen before on the streets. believe he's a transient. picked up questions at this public housing building and his head covered with a sheet to protect his identity. officials say he was a visitor here but that's frightening

firefighters aren't sure how the grass-like tu lee plants caught the marsh. they're not concerned because the fire was surrounded by water. they called from al moe square park. the first in the building. flames raced into the attic and eventually spread to three other buildings. >> i ran inside to get the cats and then, um, when i was doing that, the police pounded on all the doors in the building and said, out now. and one very nice police officer, i don't know who he was, helped me for a minute to find one of my cats because i couldn't find her. >> she was able to get both cats

out safely. 25 apartments are impacted by the fire. the red cross is helping displaced residents. a car burst into flames in a marina district today in san francisco. the driver of this astin martin was alerted when someone said your car is on fire. he found a plume of smoke coming from the engine. no word on what caused it. he had only had the $120,000 car for a year. it had only 4,000 miles on it. a new online video reportedly shows the terrorist group isis beheading japanese reporter kenji goto. the national security council is working to confirm the awe then tisty of the video. the 46-year-old was captured by militants in syria while trying to win the release of another japanese hostage who has been killed by isis. the center of negotiations trying to exchange him and a jordanian air force pilot for a

brown spent less than his opponent to get back into office and just a fraction of what he spent in 2010. last year's gubernatorial campaign cost brown $5.9 million and most of that went to supporting a water bond and a rainy day fund. his opponent, neil castcar re spent 3.million dollars. brown spent $36 million in the 2010 election and former ebay chief, meg whitman, spent in a losing effort and that's a record for the state. people in southern california celebrating the art of 3 d printing this week. this is the second year for the 3d world expo. more than 50 companies show off just about everything you can do with a 3d printer from the unusual, to practical to real

bright flash in the sky. it looked like a glowing fireball streaking across the sky. some people called 9-1-1 thoi thought it was a plane crash but authorities believe it was likely a meteor. another flash of light surprised people on the california central coast. it's nasa's delta 2 rocket with a satellite that can measure soil from space. went off from vanden burg in santa maria. people on the coast reported seeing a bright light flash across the sky. the ocean appears to be losing oxygen at a rate that scientists find alarming. researchers from uc davis studied change to marine chemicals in the pacific and indian ocean. they found the ocean's oxygen is depleting at a rate similar to the end of the last ice age which took place 12,000 years ago but actually they consider the current change even more extreme. they believe this could have a

the breeze cooler and cloudier day for sunday. then we look long-term and a next chance for rain looks to come friday night into saturday morning but out there right now, it is still warm. these numbers are what we should typically see in our afternoon not at 9:00 at night. 58 in san francisco. 57 currently in hayward. fremont still at 60 degrees. antioch, 57 at san jose with the current temperature of 56 degrees. the satellite radar, show you the story we're tracking. first off, clear skies for much of the day across california to start off our weekend. but those clear skies going to give way to high clouds with the advancing cold front. unfortunately, the high pressure is going to keep the moisture at bay. we get the high cloud not the rain and switch wind to a sea breeze. so sunday morning still notice some clouds on the increase as the on shore wind develops bringing the water off the pacific ocean, increasing the cloud cover overhead sunday afternoon. we call it peeks of sunshine tomorrow afternoon. bright as we were today, nor as

warm with the wind coming off the ocean waters with the temperature in the upper 50s. as we look at the long-term forecast hoping for any sort of storm fnt horizon, friday night into saturday morning of next week could be a favorable pattern for us. the question is how far south can this moisture get? right now our guidance is hinting at areas from san francisco north. best chance for showers. hopefully the trend is for this rain to trend farther south and bring rain to the entire region. right now, not looking like a blockbuster storm. quarter to half an inch until late next week. overnight lows in the bay area. 47 at san francisco. 45 at oakland dropping to 44 in san jose. overnight in concord, clearing way to high clouds. for sunday yes it will be mild and temperatures in the 60s but not the record breaking warmth we had today thanks to the sea breeze. 67 in napa. 67 in concord and fairfield.

up to 66 in antioch. here's your accuweather seven-day forecast. cloudier and cooler to end the weekend. monday, the morning fog giving way to sunshine by the afternoon. a slight dip in temperatures on tuesday but back up on wednesday, more mild air with 70 in a couple spots. by thursday, clouds will be on the increase ahead of the system that we're tracking for friday evening that will likely bring us showers. the question how far south will the rain get? we'll keep fine tuning that. the showers last until the first half of saturday. >> let us hope so. thank you, drew. drew maybe you heard or didn't hear phones ringing this evening when the hall of fame calls started going out. >> again you had to. i guess that's a good alternative. got it right on two counts. fofrmer 49er both got the nod.

davis frat house. what some say the motive is behind us and the rising price of a super bowl party. what it's likely to cost this year next on abc7 news at 11:00. today dozens of young girls in san francisco got to try out several new sports to see what clicked. san francisco rec and park demonstrated at golden gate park. girls ages 5 to 12 got a taste of ball to soccer, sport to sport meeting new coaches and learning how to play. it's more than just physically healthy, it's about giving girls self-confidence and helping them grow emotionally. i bet your daughter played a lot of sports. >> she did and i love that story. where else do you get a chance to get exposed to that many sports? >> not all football.
